The teachers and healing arts professionals at Dream Yoga are the best! They have training in a variety of yoga, meditation, massage, acupuncture, and other holistic disciplines that are proven to enhance health, well-being and personal transformation. All have made their yoga or meditation practice, and/or the healing arts service they provide, central to their lives. For us, teaching yoga and meditation, and providing a healing arts service…is simply sharing what we love and what we know works.
Most of Dream’s yoga teachers are trained in the tradition of Kripalu Yoga—a yoga practice that teaches the basic mechanics of yoga postures and breath…while encouraging inner focus, feeling, and mind-body awareness. Kripalu Yoga is often referred to as "the yoga of life." Many also have additional training and experience in using "yoga as medicine" or "therapeutic yoga."

Steve was first introduced to yoga through a university immersion program where he studied and practiced yoga 4 hours each day. Life got busy with work and family and it wasn’t until some years later that Steve realized that he needed to reengage his yoga practice. He began taking classes from Luann, back when Dream Yoga studio was in her basement. Steve returned to yoga in order to enhance strength, increase flexibility and to develop a more balanced perspective. To deepen his individual practice, Steve completed his 200-hour Pranakryia teacher training at Dream Yoga in 2011. He completes his 300-hour Advanced Teacher Training in December of 2018.
Steve feels that yoga should be engaging, fulfilling and fun. His classes incorporate slow flows with a concentration on deep stretching. Steve uses poses to gently invigorate, stretch tight muscles and strengthen the entire body.
When not spending time with his family, Steve enjoys water sports. Steve left the corporate world 4 years ago and is a High School Sailing Coach in the Spring & Fall, directs a youth sailing program during the summer, and is a relief Captain on a 65-foot commercial schooner.

Nancy began her yoga journey in search of a physical adjunct to her meditation practice. The use of the breath and the attentiveness to the present moment while practicing brought increased depth to her meditation practice and provided a welcome respite from an all too busy life working on the Hill and tending to the needs of her family. She completed her teacher training with Frances Stahnke at Sacred Well Yoga Studio in 2009, and has been a regular student at Dream Yoga. A life-time learner, she has also studied with Erich Schiffmann, Kripalu’s Rudy Peirce (completing her Gentle Dynamic Yoga certification), Baxter Bell, M.D., and Amy Weintraub. From these master teachers and others, she learned the importance of alignment, of breath, of listening to one’s body, accepting it and being grateful for all it can do, whether or not handstand is ever achieved. After all, she says, “It’s all practice.” She invites practice with laughter and compassion, “so we can be more fully alive.” As Mahatma Gandhi said, “There is more to life than increasing its speed.”

Susan began her yoga journey in 2004 after encountering a studio owner while walking her dog. After 12 years in a hot yoga room, Susan decided to explore other styles (and temperatures) of yoga, which ultimately led her to becoming a yoga teacher. Her goal is to make yoga accessible to all people to reduce stress and anxiety, and provide the means to better connect with the body.
Teaching has always been incorporated in Susan’s life. After graduating with a B.S. in Family Studies, Susan worked as a community mental health counselor assisting clients in learning basic life skills. She then switched to the animal welfare field, first caring for animals before teaching humane education to D.C. school children. After her own two children entered elementary school, Susan earned her M.A. in English and Secondary Education licensure and taught in Fairfax County.

Bernadette has been a massage therapist since 2005, after graduating from Tai Chi Massage School in Herndon, Va. She is passionate about using Certified-Pure Therapeutic-Grade essential oils—what she calls “nature's medicine” – as a key part of her practice. Her Swedish massage with the oils is “not your normal” essential oil massage. The combination of the oils she uses, based on an intuitive and technology-supported scan and assessment of your body’s energy needs, enables her to use the oils to support your body’s own intelligence to heal--minimizing symptoms and addressing root causes of ailments. Her experience with and use of Reiki, Play and Movement, Health Coaching and laughter...combined with her gentle nature…makes a session with Bernadette particularly healing and, to many, life-changing.
A significant life event led Bernadette to her more naturalistic approach to healing. About 13 years ago, she went "Code Blue" in a hospital emergency room due to a reaction to antibiotics. The trauma induced a Grand Mal Seizure that left her in a coma for three days, as well as breaking two lumbar vertebrae in her back. While in the coma, she didn’t feel her body, just unconditional love and peace! For six months after awakening from the coma, she felt extreme pain from the broken ribs causing sleepless nights, difficulty breathing and unclear thinking. She discovered a strong mind-body connection between her thoughts, pain and healing her body. The body, she has confirmed, is an amazing tool that changes chemistry as thinking changes; with intricate emotional, mental, physical and spiritual connections. The more she noticed grievances, irritation and discomfort, she found herself saying, "Oh, here is an opportunity to heal." Bernadette has helped people address back and other pain, insomnia, anxiety, ADHD, IBS, hormonal imbalance, asthma, sprains and breaks, nausea, cancer recovery, more. She is delighted to be able to help facilitate healing for you at Dream.

Jon Waterman began practicing yoga and meditation while teaching the martial arts in the early 70s. Since then, he has studied extensively with teachers from around the world with a concentration, since 1994, on Buddhist insight meditation. Over the past two decades, he has strengthened his personal practice by attending over 100 retreats and workshops. The majority of these being seven to thirty-day, silent, residential retreat settings.
His meditation classes, workshops and retreats focus on reducing stress and strengthening continuity of present moment awareness by synthesizing mindful movement, various meditation techniques and insight dialogue within a relaxed environment. He is one of the founding directors of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington (IMCW) and has been a member of that organization’s Teacher’s Council since its inception.
In 2007, Jon found a consortium of instructors and students of the internal arts known as the Peaceable Dragon and rejuvenated his practice of the Yang style of tai chi. The moderate and easy flowing method of this style makes it safe and easy to learn, a joy to practice, and one of the most popular of all tai chi styles.
Jon is fortunate to be able to dedicate his career to this work. His courses are well-received in high school, hospital, prison, business and medical research environments. He enjoys a successful personal coaching practice and is a founding partner of Mind-Body Health Associates, a group dedicated to bringing stress reduction programs into the community and workplace.
